As coronavirus cases spike in much of the world, Taiwan continues to receive high praise globally for its handling of the pandemic and the relatively limited impact it has had on the overall economy. The world is now eagerly anticipating the roll-out of Covid-19 vaccines. What are Taiwan’s plans for the acquisition and deployment of vaccines and what control measures will be implemented during the interim period until large-scale supplies of the vaccine are available?

During the course of the pandemic, Dr Chen Shih-chung has been at the forefront of Taiwan’s response in his capacity as Minister of the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW), especially through the agencies under its authority: the Centers for Disease Control and its subordinate units, the National Health Command Center (NHCC), a unified central command system that includes the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

But despite Taiwan’s excellent performance during the pandemic, there remain challenges ahead to maintain the resilience of Taiwan’s healthcare and welfare system. In addition to keeping Taiwan insulated from the current pandemic, authorities have to be prepared for possible future pandemics. At the same time, Taiwan faces the challenges of an aging society and a rise in non-communicable diseases, which will put added strains on both the healthcare system and welfare programmes.

At this event, our guest speaker will talk about how the MOHW is working to keep the residents of Taiwan safe from the current pandemic as well as future health and welfare reforms and policy direction aimed at addressing the challenges facing the system.

Among other subjects that will be discussed will include the following:
• Ongoing Covid-19 actions to safeguard residents
• An update on vaccine and treatment developments
• Conditions required for relaxing global travel restrictions and quarantine requirements
• Future policy direction regarding healthcare spending and priorities and private sector involvement in the healthcare system.
