Retail & Distribution committee makes progress on packaging, food issues

The ECCT's Retail & Distribution committee has made progress on the following issues:

  • Industry's Responsibility for Recycling Relevant Symbols on Plastic Flat Packing Materials: In a recent meeting, the MOENV, agreed in principle to the committee's proposals to: 1) Accept international triangle recycling marks, 2) Allow a sufficient grace period of at least 2 years.
  • Food product labelling: On 17 August, the FDA announced "Regulations on Nutrition Claim for Prepackaged Food Products" amendment to allow nutrient content to be claimed/labelled on the package. For example, soy milk contains rich protein were not allowed to claim that on the package. Now, soy milk labels/packaging can claim "8.3g protein".
  • Regulation of food for infants - Allowing internet sales of infant/follow-on formula: The Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) has changed rules to allow online sales of infant formula.
