ECCT CSR and Southern Taiwan Committee Beach Cleaning Event

Together with the Ocean Affairs Council and the Kaohsiung City Government /

與海洋委員會及高雄市政府共同舉辦之高雄淨灘日

2020 Beach Cleaning Day in Kaohsiung

Date: Saturday, 21 November 2020
Time: 08:30-12:00
Location: Cijin Shell Museum / 旗津貝殼博物館

Following the ECCT’s visit to the Ocean Affairs Council (OAC) in Kaohsiung on 13 January, the ECCT is teaming up with the OAC to arrange a beach cleaning event in Kaohsiung. The OAC is responsible for the overall planning, deliberation, coordination and implementation of Taiwan’s general marine policy, promotion of the development of marine industry, marine environmental protection, resources management, sustainable development, biodiversity conservation and pollution prevention and control. The decision to cooperate with the OAC was made as part of the ECCT’s efforts to work together government agencies to find workable solutions to environmental problems and because the the OAC has ambitious plans to put a stop to polluting activities, clean up legacy ocean debris and promote the sustainable development of marine resources. This will be the ECCT’s first beach cleaning day arranged by the Southern Taiwan in Kaohsiung and follows 10 years of annual beach cleaning days, held in October every year together with the Taipei European School in northern Taiwan.

The World Economic Forum predicts that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish. Plastic debris makes up around 85% of all the rubbish that washes up on beaches and waterways and oceans. Once in the water, plastic never completely biodegrades but instead breaks down into smaller pieces that is sometimes mistaken for food by marine animals. Fishing lines take 600 years to biodegrade, aluminium cans up to 200 years and tin cans around 50 years. During this time, they are not only eye-sores but can also potentially be a hazard and health risk to both animals and humans. There is already evidence that humans are ingesting microplastics when eating fish and other seafood.

In order to raise awareness and take proactive action to mitigate some of the damage to our oceans caused by human activity, the ECCT’s Southern Taiwan committee sincerely invites you and bring your friends and family members to clean the beach together and make a contribution to Taiwan and the environment. We look forward to seeing you there!
