Jane Goodall Institute - Taiwan
Inspiring Hope through Action

Our Vision
Our vision is for a healthy planet where people make compassionate choices to live sustainably and in harmony with each other, the environment and other animals.

Who are we
The Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) is a global apolitical non-profit NGO. Founded in 1977 by Dr Jane Goodall, world-renowned ethologist, humanitarian, conservationist and UN Messenger of Peace, JGI currently has 24 offices worldwide and Roots & Shoots programs in more than 65 countries.

We work to promote the conservation and understanding of chimpanzees and other great apes (our closest living relatives) and, through our Roots & Shoots program, aim to empower the next generation to be socially and environmentally conscious citizens of our shared planet.

Our belief in the inter-connectedness of animals, people and the environment (APE) stems from Jane’s vision, her tireless work, integrity, knowledge and messages of hope continue to inspire millions of people into meaningful action in their communities.

What do we do
Our diversified programs include community-led conservation, chimpanzee sanctuaries, scientific discovery and research, as well as our global humanitarian and environmental program, Roots & Shoots, which works to educate and empower young people of all ages to choose and become involved in hands-on projects for animals, people and the environment.

The Jane Goodall Institute Taiwan was established in 1998 and has since engaged with more than 900 local schools to promote environmental education through Roots & Shoots. In Taiwan we have developed many projects and initiatives, working with schools, communities, business corporates and NGO counterparts.

Our Green Thumb project has helped more than 198 schools to create native plant sites in their campuses; the Eco-Art program has worked with more than 250 classes to speak up for nature through our annual animal parades. We have partnered with Chang Jung Christian University to develop the International Program of Sustainability (IPSD), offering 30 scholarships to our R&S youths around the world annually.

Our Jane Goodall Roots & Shoots Eco-center, established with the support of Chung Jung Christian University, seeks to empower youths from the Asia-Pacific region to take action by facilitating their projects, hosting workshops and summits.

In 2020, the institute will be establishing the Jane Goodall Experimental Institution in Taipei, the first institute in Asia to offer the Roots & Shoots curriculum in a formal school setting for primary school children.
