The impending trade war between the United States and China is threatening to disrupt global supply chains. The Trump administration has so far levied 25% tariffs on US$50 billion worth of Chinese industrial goods and has threatened to impose similar tariffs on another US$200 billion worth of goods originating in China. If the list of targeted goods expands beyond this, it will have serious implications for manufacturers. Many companies operating in China have already started shifting production to other countries. This presents both a threat and an opportunity for Taiwanese manufacturers. However, for players in the shipping and logistics industry, as more production and assembly shifts out of China, there is a good opportunity for Taiwan to become a hub for the final assembly and place of origin of a variety of products destined for export.

With its central location in the Asia Pacific region, Taiwan is ideally placed to serve as a regional logistics and transshipment hub. Many local and international logistics companies are already operating in Taiwan to take advantage of its location but there are still a number of challenges to overcome before Taiwan can be recognised as the go-to location for the logistics industry. In particular, regulatory barriers need to be removed, systems need to be modernized and customs procedures need to be streamlined and made more efficient. To become truly successful and competitive versus other regional locations, these and other issues need to be addressed.

At this event our guest speakers will address the following topics and present some of the solutions they are implementing to meet the challenges:

  • What the central government is doing in terms of building logistics infrastructure
  • How shipping and logistics industry players are adapting to meet the challenges of technological advances, digitalization and e-commerce
  • How authorities are working to modernize regulations, IT systems and streamline customs procedures in line with international standards and best practices
  • How business can leverage Taiwan’s Free Trade Zones for regional and global transshipment and logistics operations.
