As of 25 February, the number of people infected by the 2019 novel coronavirus (Covid-19) has exceeded 80,000 and the number of deaths had surpassed 2,600. While 95% of cases have been confined to China, the number of cases in Europe, the middle east and elsewhere globally have spiked over the past week, giving rise to fears of a much larger global pandemic. Over the past few weeks, authorities in both China and elsewhere have taken increasingly drastic measures to try to contain the spread. On 20 February the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States included Taiwan on its list of destinations with an apparent community spread of Covid-19, along with China, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam. However, Taiwan authorities have objected to the designation. Foreign ministry spokeswoman Joanne Ou said that the coronavirus status here in Taiwan does not meet the criteria set by the island’s Centers for Disease Control as necessary for the “community spread” designation as Taiwan has only isolated cases of the virus. President Tsai has instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ask the US to correct Taiwan’s status.

Here in Taiwan, as a precautionary measure, authorities in Taiwan have banned all Chinese nationals from entering Taiwan, while people who have travelled to China, Hong Kong or Macau in the previous 14 days are to be put under mandatory home quarantine for 14 days after returning to Taiwan.

The outbreak has led to the panic purchasing and hoarding of certain items such as surgical masks, prompting healthcare authorities to introduce an unprecedented rationing programme which allows Taiwan residents to purchase only two masks every seven days.

• What precautions should companies take to safeguard their employees and customers?
• What are authorities doing to ensure sufficient supplies of surgical masks, thermometers and other items?
• Where can foreign residents get information and medical assistance?
• What are the conditions for quarantining of employees?
• What are the legal requirements in terms of granting sick leave to quarantined employees and to those who need to take care of children and aged parents?

At this event, our guest speaker will answer these and any other questions members may have.
