LCI New Member: Jane Goodall Institute 珍古德教育及保育協會

The ECCT's Low Carbon Initiative proudly welcomes its new member: the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) to be the 57th member of the LCI!

The Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) is a global apolitical non-profit NGO with 24 offices worldwide and Roots & Shoots programs in more than 65 countries. In 1977, JGI is founded by Dr Jane Goodall, world-renowned ethologist, humanitarian, conservationist and UN Messenger of Peace, who is also awarded Tang Prize in Sustainable Development 2020 唐獎永續發展獎, recognizing her ground-breaking discovery in primatology that redefines human-animal relationship and her lifelong, unparalleled dedication to the conservation of Earth environment.

JGI works to promote the conservation and understanding of chimpanzees and other great apes (our closest living relatives) and, through its Roots & Shoots program, aim to empower the next generation to be socially and environmentally conscious citizens of the shared planet. Its belief in the inter-connectedness of animals, people and the environment (APE) stems from Jane’s vision, her tireless work, integrity, knowledge and messages of hope continue to inspire millions of people into meaningful action in their communities.

JGI's diversified programs include community-led conservation, chimpanzee sanctuaries, scientific discovery and research, as well as the global humanitarian and environmental program, Roots & Shoots, working to educate and empower young people of all ages to choose and become involved in hands-on projects for animals, people and the environment, which are all under one of the LCI's platforms: CSR & Education.

The Jane Goodall Institute Taiwan was established in 1998 and has since engaged with more than 900 local schools to promote environmental education through Roots & Shoots. Its Green Thumb project has helped more than 198 schools to create native plant sites in their campuses; the Eco-Art program has worked with more than 250 classes to speak up for nature through our annual animal parades. Its Jane Goodall Roots & Shoots Eco-center, established with the support of Chung Jung Christian University, seeks to empower youths from the Asia-Pacific region to take action by facilitating their projects, hosting workshops and summits.

In 2020, the institute will be establishing the Jane Goodall Experimental Institution in Taipei, the first institute in Asia to offer the Roots & Shoots curriculum in a formal school setting for primary school children.
