In 2015, in response to universal challenges, the United Nations proposed 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as guidelines for countries of the world to actively work to achieve by 2030. Since then governments and multinational corporations have been working continuously to develop and implement plans in line with the SDGs. What are municipal governments in Taiwan and local branches of multinational corporations doing to achieve the SDGs? What progress have they made since 2015 and what are their plans for the next few years? At this event, we will hear from a distinguished panel of city mayors, senior government officials and corporate leaders how they are working to meet the 17 SDGs in their operations.

The full-day forum is organized jointly by the CommonWealth Magazine 天下雜誌 and the ECCT's Low Carbon Initiative (LCI) 低碳倡議行動. Participants will present feasible policies and detailed industry practices aimed at achieving SDGs. The forum will feature four sessions on the following topics: Visions for cities of the future, Corporate responsibility for social development, Forging global partnerships to achieve SDGs and 100 ways to practice sustainability.

The UN’s 17 SDGs, which include ending poverty and hunger, achieving gender equality, ensuring clean water and sanitation, combating climate change, ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns and more, is a set of goals with 169 targets that cover economic growth, social progress and environmental protection.

For governments, SDGs can be used as the basis for policymaking guidelines for many areas including urban development and supporting the implementation of policy in local communities. For enterprises, focusing on SDGs can improve their competitiveness and their attraction to employees as well as consumers, as over 60% of consumers are willing to spend more on brands that embrace sustainable development concepts.
