ECCT Special Luncheon
Bringing Taiwan in line with international health standards: How to protect consumer health, safety & choice
Speaker: Ching-Chuan Yeh (葉金川), Minister, Department of Health衛生署 葉金川署長
In the light of recent incidents of melamine tainted food products manufactured in China, it has become more urgent than ever for the Taiwan government to fully adopt international standards and practices in regulating the licensing, sales and distribution of food and pharmaceutical products in Taiwan. Taiwan-only requirements continue to obstruct Taiwan's industry development and form non-tariff barriers for European manufacturers and importers. Adopting international standards protects the health and safety of consumers, while providing them a larger choice of high-quality and innovative products. We are very glad to invite DoH Minister Yeh to share his valuable views on how teh Taiwan government will work to:
1. Ensure Taiwan's standards are in conformity with international standards for food safety and drug licensing regulations; 2. Establish a clear and transparant framework for international companies to follow; 3. Safeguard (within the WTO free-trade framework) international trade from interruption by unwelcome incidents and to guarantee the rights of enterprises and suppliers. 4. Introduce pro-active plans to minimize the damage caused by sudden crises.
