It has been 21 years since IBM’s Deep Blue Supercomputer beat then reigning world chess champion Gary Kasparov at his own game (in 1997) and seven years since IBM’s Watson beat humans in the quiz show Jeopardy (in 2011). Since then, there have been further advances in the ability of machines to mimic cognitive functions that humans associate with other human minds, such as learning and problem solving. In June this year, IBM successfully demonstrated its AI “Debater”, which is able to make coherent arguments and reply to arguments made by humans. But beyond the headline stories, heavy investments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) by tech companies are already producing results that are changing our lives and gadgets, and laying the groundwork for a more AI-centric future.

At the workshop, speakers will give an overview of the most significant recent developments in AI, and how AI is being used in a variety of applications, with a focus on voice, augmented and mixed reality. At the lunch, our guest speaker will talk about how AI is revolutionising industries and everyday life.
