Taiwan continues its move towards adopting international standards and it is a stated objective of Taiwan's Food & Drug Administration (TFDA) to "establish an internationalized regulatory system for food, drugs, medical devices andcosmetics". At this event, jointly hosted by the ECCT's Retail & Distribution and Pharmaceutical committees, our guest speaker will outline the TFDA's vision and future policy direction towards reaching its objectives.

In 2017 the TFDA announced draft regulations regarding market access for beef from The Netherlands and Sweden while the Council of Agriculture simplified theorganiclabelling permit application process for importing organic products, thereby giving consumers in Taiwan a wider variety of healthy, affordable and high-quality food products. However, in the fields of food and drug controls, there remain instances where Taiwan's standards and procedures deviate from established international norms.

In terms of food, even though the European Union (EU) is a major producerofhigh quality food products, food-related exports from the EU to Taiwan remain relatively low, accounting for just 13% of Taiwan's food imports. This indicates that there is room to improve Taiwan's complex approval and inspection procedures.

In terms of pharmaceuticals, by world standards, Taiwanese patients experience significant delays in getting access to new life-changing medicines, and there are several procedural barriers that can be improved to further accelerate patients' access to new treatment.

At this special event, officials from different divisions under TFDA will accompany Director-General Wu to interact with members. This will present a great opportunity for members to engage in dialogue with officials from the TFDA, exchange ideas and discuss future projects and potential areas of cooperation between the ECCT and the TFDA.
